SOUL stands for Save Our Unique Landmark
Which Landmark are we talking about ?
We are talking about St Peter and Paul's Church - one of the seven wonders of Wirral - in the New Brighton area of Wallasey which was built in 1932 to a design based on the Basilica in Lisbon, Portugal.
Why is it Unique?
St Peter and Paul's Church is one of the most identifiable buildings to be seen when looking across the Mersey from Liverpool and is one of the first sights to be seen when approaching Liverpool by sea. For this reason, in years gone by, St Peter and Paul's was affectionately known as "The Dome Of Home" by returning sailors.
Why are we trying to Save it?
The diocese state that is is too big and that the cost of retaining the church does not make economic sense.
The end result of this could be the church being found an alternative use or even, despite it's Grade 2 Listing status, demolished!
This is Our Church. The parishioners have paid for the Church; we own it; we should have a say in whether the Church is saved or turned into yet another site for development.
