FIGHTING FOR OUR FAITH

The S.O.U.L team have been working hard, meeting every week since our last open meeting in September. We have again approached the Diocese with a view to opening dialogue into saving our Church. Unfortunately, the Diocese has not taken up this offer. We have therefore employed the services of a specialist London based solicitor, at some considerable cost.

The Diocese continues to put forward what we consider to be seriously flawed arguments as to why they see it necessary to close Ss Peter and Paul's’. This is an attempt to split parishioners from the Church and each other. We are aware that some of our parishioners are attending other parishes or not attending any at all, largely due to the current awkward Mass times. Please let them know that WE ARE STILL FIGHTING and encourage them not to give up!

S.O.U.L.'s OBJECTIVES

Retention of SS Peter & Paul’s as the Parish Church, including provision of parish and community social facilities together with primary school usage.

Immediate reinstatement of the family friendly (10am or 10.30am) Sunday Mass

A supportive, understanding and proactive Parish Priest who will share the tasks with Parishioners and allow them to play an active part in the Parish.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED

We urgently need volunteers to:

Distribute Newsletters after the various Masses.

Distribute Newsletters around the local area.

Due to awkward Mass times on Sunday’s a number of people have had to miss out on the opportunity to attend.

A Vision for the Future

Most people in Britain pass a Christian church on a regular basis. What do they see? It may be an attractive or unattractive building. But what significance does it have for them? Sometimes it has great significance as the house of God, the focal point of their faith, a place of worship. Sometimes it has little meaning - an irrelevant place set apart from their day to day life. The doors are often locked for fear of burglary or vandalism, but sadly for many the doors only serve to represent an emotional and spiritual barrier that can at times seem impassable.

S.O.U.L’s vision for SS Peter & Paul’s RC church is to re-order the interior and open wide it’s doors to the people of New Brighton, inviting a whole range of local groups to use this unique and splendid Christian facility to build up the local community. The extra space would certainly benefit the church’s rapidly expanding Primary School so close by.

We know that many people in the area, indeed throughout Merseyside and much further a field, have felt disturbed at the prospect of the Shrewsbury Diocese abandoning the iconic SS Peter & Paul’s church, effectively mothballing it or letting it be converted into yet more unwanted flats.

In stark contrast, S.O.U.L. has a greater vision for the church; not just that it should remain a Catholic church for its parishioners but that it becomes a magnet that brings people together of all age groups from Mums and Toddlers through to Senior Citizens and provides a place of peace and reflection in our fractured society. We have passed a composite, positive and important proposal to the Bishop to this effect. WE AWAIT A RESPONSE!

We are aware that churches have not just been sold but given away to developers in Liverpool Archdiocese and that this may well be being considered here. We strongly oppose this on moral grounds for the simply reason that the Catholic people of New Brighton paid for the construction of this church and under Canon Law it belongs to the parishioners of SS Peter & Paul’s, along with its content such as altars, stations of the cross etc, all of which are Grade 2 Listed.

Father in heaven, our hearts desire the warmth of your love and our minds are searching for the light of your Word.

Increase our longing for Christ our Saviour and give us the strength to grow in love, that the dawn of his coming may find us rejoicing in his presence and welcoming the light of his truth.

Please remember in your prayers, the Church of Ss Peter and Paul’s, its parishioners, the children of the school and for the community of New Brighton.

The Rosary

Every Monday, after Mass, at 24 St Georges Park. Everyone welcome. We also pray for all the sick in the parish.
